The Meaning of Science ~ Its History and Branches

The Meaning of Science ~ Its History and Branches The word science originates from the Latin language. There it is called scientia and means knowledge. Looking up the word science in Websters New Dictionary we find: knowledge attained through study or practice. Reading on it says covering general truths of the operation of general laws, especially as obtained and tested through scientific method and concerned with the physical world.” In other words, science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses experimentation  and  observation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained using that system. Until the late 20th century, the history of science, especially of the physical and biological sciences, was seen as a narrative of true theories replacing false ones. Science was portrayed as a major dimension of the progress of civilization. Recent historical interpretations view science in terms of competing paradigms or conceptual systems battling for intellectual supremacy in a wider matrix that includes intellectual, cultural, economic and political themes outside pure science. Science as defined above is sometimes called pure science to differentiate it from applied science, which is the application of research to human needs. Fields of science are commonly classified along two major lines: First, the  natural sciences  such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, and environmental science. Second, the social sciences such as political science, linguistics, economics, psychology, sociology and anthropology. Physics has been a paragon of the natural sciences.  It deals with matter and energy in space and time. Physicists study a wide range of physical phenomena covering enormous scales: from the subatomic particles to the Universe as a whole. All laws and forces of nature originate from mathematical symmetries of space and time, so modern physics currently focuses on studying these symmetries. There are number of physical theories that became world famous. For example, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle. It states we only can know the position of an electron with a high degree of certainty, but not its momentum and vice  versa. Another famous theory is Albert Einsteins  Theory of General Relativity.  In his theory Einstein showed that space and time are not absolutes and that gravity is not simply a force applied to an object or mass. Rather, the gravity associated with any mass curves the very space and time (often called space-time) around it. Lastly, The Big Bang Theory is also attributed to the field of physics. It postulates that the universe began 13.7 billion years ago with a massive expansion event.  The Big Bang Theory has recently gained popularity though the TV show that was named after it. Biology is another important science in the group of natural sciences. It  deals with the study of life. It describes the characteristics, classification, and behaviors of organisms, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the environment. Biology has many specialized areas, covering a wide range of scales, from Biochemistry to ecology. Probably the most famous theory in the field of biology is Charles Darwins theory of Evolution and Natural Selection. This theory accounts for the tremendous diversity of life on Earth and so famously declared that we humans originate from primates (monkeys). Should you be interested in any of these branches of science I recommend to talk to one of our 3800  science tutors.

Chemistry Conversion Calculator Tips

Chemistry Conversion Calculator TipsA chemical analysis tool, such as a chemistry conversion calculator, is a product that allows users to easily convert scientific information into a usable format for use in their personal life. In the past, this would be a very tedious process, which could take months and thousands of dollars to create. Because of the advent of the internet, however, we can now convert information from any source into a more convenient format, which can be used by the consumer right away. Here are some helpful tips on how to find a chemistry conversion calculator:Look around online: Most products found online, at least in some way, will make this a priority. If you happen to find a product with this feature, find out about it and compare it to other products in the same category. This should give you an idea of what others have to offer.Check out a local bookstore: A lot of bookshelves will have a selection of chemistry tools that have been written by well-known au thors, who may have made the software free to the public. You can also find a number of free online chemistry calculators from forums, too. These can help you get your first chemistry conversion started!Look online: Local home improvement stores often have a product they sell on the site that contains a chemistry conversion calculator. This is especially true if they carry larger businesses that have a good number of products to choose from. Look for different options such as a free chemistry calculator for a limited time, or a money-back guarantee, as well as convenience and ease of use.Get a professional product: Professional products can save you a lot of money over time because they come with a warranty. Ask if you can buy one as a gift. Also, look for a company that has offered a limited period of time of special pricing, so that you will have plenty of opportunity to try out their product before paying full price.Look around on eBay: eBay is notorious for selling some very hig h-priced items. You can often find chemistry tools for much less than other, more expensive products. Just remember to read the feedback that people leave when they purchase something, so that you know if they're happy with their purchase.Free products are a great way to start. But if you really want to convert information from multiple sources into a more manageable format, look for a professional product that provides a lifetime warranty. It's always worth it to save some money by buying something with a lifetime warranty, since you will still have it after your kids move out.

How to Find a Private Tutor For Private Schools

How to Find a Private Tutor For Private SchoolsHow to find a private tutor to help you in school can be very hard if you have decided on a certain area of education. This is because all the popular ones that offer tutoring also offer courses or subjects. Although they say you can find your own way, this is not so at all. The best way to find a tutor is by doing the research on your school and your teachers. At times public tutors are given extra benefits. Sometimes, they are given an introduction to their students at their school, and sometimes they will be given the opportunity to attend the same class as their students. If they can offer their students good quality service, they will usually be taken. All the time, a public school offers these things to students, and in exchange for it, they will give their students a very big advantage. Even though they say that these tutors are only there to teach their students, many times these tutors are actually some teachers themselves.Teacher s are not the only ones that want to help students. Some others will even offer tutoring services to students who are having trouble with their subjects or their classmates. This is where parents' help becomes a great help to their students. They know how to find a tutor if they find out that their child has some problems with their schoolwork. If your child is having difficulties, all you need to do is to take your child to a private tutor that knows what he is doing. When your child seeks a private tutor, it's important that he wants a tutor who will help him to become well. He should be determined to do his studies well, and if he is not, then that's no reason to stay in school. Because, the longer he stays in school, the harder it will be for him to face the future and make it big. How to find a private tutor is as easy as finding a teacher who can offer a better learning experience. Of course, these tutors should also be experienced, but not necessarily a teacher. With all the co mpetition in public schools, all the students want to graduate. This is why they will make sure that they will be prepared, so that they can get the best possible education that they can receive from their teachers.

Muay Thai Clubs in Belfast

Muay Thai Clubs in Belfast Discovering Belfast Muay Thai Clubs ChaptersWhat Does Muay Thai Involve? What Gear Do You Need to Practise Muay Thai?Where Can You Practise Muay Thai? The Point of Muay ThaiOutsiders might think that Belfast would be a strange place to engage in a combat sport; many still believe it is a troubled place. How could they know about life in this vibrant, still-healing city?People who idolise Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, who want to emulate their speed, agility and ability to vanquish any foe are usually surprised to discover that the martial arts are more about discipline and conditioning than fighting. That doesn’t mean you can’t fight but combat is not the primary purpose of the martial arts. The same holds true for Muay Thai; Thai boxing as it is also known. Although it appears brutal and lethal, it is really more of a contest of skill and endurance than a need/desire to pound one’ s opponent into the canvas. As with other martial arts, Muay Thai is full of ceremony; for instance, the fighters might enter the ring wearin g a headband called a mongkhon and a pra jiad, a type of armband. They are both removed before the bout begins, of course. The traditions associated with those two items speak to the long history of the ancient art of Thai fighting. If you think about Muay Thai in those terms, Muay Thai training in Belfast absolutely makes sense, doesn’t it?Come with your Superprof now; let’s discover together the best places to learn Muay Thai in and around Belfast. Women practise Muay Thai for strength conditioning and self defense Image by Claudio_Scott from PixabayBesides maximising the points of contact, Muay Thai techniques call for clinching and grappling; roundhouse kicks are a way to keep your opponent at a distance while still landing blows.Muay Thai is indeed a full-contact sport but you needn’t have a desire to experience hand to hand combat to appreciate the strength and conditioning a Muay Thai workout regimen could bring.Training is rigorous and demanding; you will have to be in peak physical condition or very nearly there to endure the running, rope jumping, callisthenics and core strength routines your trainer will put you through… and that’s before you even enter the ring for a few rounds of sparring! The long and the short of it is: if the medicine ball is your favourite toy, you’re golden as far as training techniques are concerned.Almost forgot! You will also engage in shadow boxing, work the heavy bag and your coach w ill challenge you with focus mitts and Thai pads â€" not just to punch but to hit with your shins, elbows, forearms and feet.Keep in mind that Muay Thai training is designed to condition you to your highest possible level of fitness and make you supremely tough.Of course, martial arts training in general and Muay Thai training in particular do not mean you are automatically setting yourself up for competition in the ring.Plenty of people undertake these training methods as a matter of personal fitness; a way of becoming their best self. Just ask trainees at the Muay Thai clubs in Birmingham! What Gear Do You Need to Practise Muay Thai?Earlier, we mentioned two ‘accessories’ that Muay Thai fighters wear into the ring but remove before their bout, the mongkhon (also mongkol) and pra jiad. Let’s take a moment to talk about them before we disclose what you should have before stepping into the ring.Centuries ago, when Muay Thai was a military exercise, fighters practised this discip line with the full expectation of going off to war and possibly losing their life. Note the armband of the fighter in the clinch: that is a pra jiad Image by Taco Fleur from PixabayUpon leaving their home, they would tear off a piece of a loved one’s clothing; often their mothers’ sarong. These scraps of cloth became their talisman. They would wear them into battle, symbolically wrapping their loved ones’ wishes for their safe return around themselves.Today, the mongkol is still a symbol of affiliation â€" not with one’s kin but to one’s gym. When your trainer deems you ready for the ring, s/he will ceremoniously present you with a mongkol. As you might suspect, it is a great honour to receive one!Muay Thai clubs in Belfast, much like the Muay Thai clubs in London have a variety of protective gear that you may borrow but it is recommended that, if you intend to continue your training, you buy your owngloves: Muay Thai gloves if possible; boxing gloves if nothand wraps: essential to keeping your hands safe, even inside the glovesMuay Thai shorts: shorter th an basketball shorts, they are designed for maximum flexibilityyou may also consider MMA shorts if you feel more comfortable in themshin guards: you may not be permitted to spar without them!mouthguardgroin guardelbow and knee pads: not necessary but nice to haveankle supports: again, not necessary but preferred by many fightersThere is other protective equipment you might consider, such as headgear, compression shorts and breathable training shirts but they are not really necessary; Muay Thai training is generally more focused on skill than boxing, making protection for your head a bit superfluous. The trainers at Glasgow Muay Thai clubs don’t make their fighters wear them!Where Can You Practise Muay Thai?Whether you have long been searching for a martial art to immerse yourself into or if you’ve only now gained an interest in personal fitness and want to see how far you can go, Muay Thai has a lot to offer.  So do Belfast Muay Thai clubs! If you are in Central Belfast, you might drop in on SBG Belfast. They have a full martial arts curriculum including classes in Muay Thai.If you are not quite up to the physical conditioning this rigorous discipline demands, you may consider their strength training programmes before committing the Muay Thai.We really like that they have something for everyone, even Muay Thai classes for kids â€" little ones and teenagers. We also liked that prospective trainees must undergo an evaluation before they start training. Children can also practise Muay Thai, although in Belfast, they will work out in gyms Image by Sasin Tipchai from PixabayIf you hang your hat closer to Strandtown, think about Prokick Gym.Although they offer classes in kickboxing their focus is Muay Thai and they have an excellent programme that is well-suited to beginners â€" they actually offer beginner Muay Thai courses!Starting at £5 per class, you could hardly beat this deal. We couldn’t find any Muay Thai classes in Manchester for that price! If you are more towards Ardoyne, Langka Muay Thai is for you. This is the club to be if you are interested in competing. Besides their regular pad and sparring sessions throughout the week, they host competition night featuring amateur and intermediate fighters of all weight classes. If you are a university student, you may already know about Queen’s Students’ Union Kickboxing and Muay Thai. They take a two-pronged approach to training; those who want to know more about the discipline a nd fighting techniques and those who truly wish to step into the ring to compete. Finally, if you happen to carouse on West Bank Road, you might check out the IFS MMA Club.Just because MMA is in their name, that doesn’t mean that is all they do. In fact, they take an egalitarian approach to training; anyone who shows an interest - in Muay Thai or MMA. male, female or child, is welcome. What we really like about this club is their 8-week trial programme. You only need to commit for eight weeks (initially). If they can’t make you love Muay Thai as much as they do in that time, you’ll not be pressured into any further commitment or to a contract. We looked at Muay Thai clubs all over the UK and couldn’t find a deal like that anywhere else! The Point of Muay ThaiUnderstandably, violence is a touchy subject and, to the uninitiated, Muay Thai appears violent indeed. It is a full-contact combat sport and fighters step into the ring with little in the way of personal protection.Furthermor e, unlike boxing, a sport where the blows are restricted to a certain area of the body and clinching is against the rules, Muay Thai seems to embrace ‘dirty fighting’ tactics. That’s just the way it looks and, really, that’s the point of Muay Thai.Remember that it started out as a way to fight wars; it only gradually became a sport. The idea is not to beat the tar out of your opponent but to strategise your attack while avoiding any blows. Being able to do so takes a great deal of skill, endurance and stamina. Those qualities are what the Muay Thai fighter cultivates. Facing off in the ring is just a chance to prove how well s/he has done. But why take our word for it? Now that you know where you can train, why not find out for yourself what it’s all about? Now discover the Muay Thai clubs in Cardiff…

Sign Language

Sign Language What Everyone Should Know About Sign Language ChaptersThe Advantages of Learning Sign LanguageFinding Sign Language ClassesResources and Apps to Learn Sign LanguageTips to Help You Learn Sign LanguageUnless you live in a very small town and never watch the telly, you have surely laid eyes on people who, through gestures and facial expression, enjoy lively conversation.Well, at least it looks lively; certainly livelier than mere speaking.Indeed, sign language is a fairly energetic undertaking; it involves much of your body â€" not just hands and arms.Wouldn’t you like to know how complex ideas can be conveyed without uttering a single word? How about being able to understand the concepts illustrated by those fluid gestures?Learning to sign involves equal parts of making the correct movements and building receptive skills â€" correctly ‘receiving’ the ideas conveyed through gestures and expressions.Sign language is communication on a whole different level, one that hearing people seem little aware of. And if there is awarene ss, it is more of an abstract variety. For hearing people and for much of the world, sign language is what deaf people do, just like Chinese people speak Chinese and French people speak French.Bet you didn’t know that there is a French sign language for French people who are deaf! There is so much about deaf culture, deaf history and the deaf community that the average person hasn’t even considered.Your Superprof hopes to remedy that situation by showing you how learning to sign can benefit you even if you are not hearing-impaired. We’d also like to point you to classes for learning sign language, and tips and resources so you can learn better and faster.Put on your noise-cancelling headphones and read on! £30,000 per year, that the job often involves travel (usually at your clients’ expense) and that you will always learn new things. We’d like to put a very personal reason for learning how to sign in the spotlight. When infants arch their backs, they are communicating that th ey want to be picked them up. Clearly, this baby wants something; could baby signing unlock that mystery? Image by joffi from PixabayIf you have ever been around a baby that’s even a couple of months old, you might have witnessed such a thing: the child, laying on its back, looks up at the adult face hovering over him (he can’t really see at that stage), and arches his back.Isn’t it remarkable how much easier that makes it to slide your hands under and lift him?If you are around babies a lot or if you have a baby, you must have noticed that your child learned early how to communicate: this cry means ‘hungry’ and that one means ‘nappy change, please!’All of this early communication is a subject of much wonder and awe… but what does the average parent do with it? Besides cherishing, nothing. We wait for a year for our children to become verbal. That is a lot of wasted time.If you want to see for yourself how powerful and influential sign language can be, why not teach your child baby sign language?St udies have shown that children who were taught to sign as babies generally perform better in school, suffer lower levels of stress, are more confident and can express themselves better.Sign language offers you those same benefits, along with those you might enjoy by learning any other language. You will find yourself multi-tasking like a pro, thinking at lightning speed and delighting in the boost to your memory. You will become more focused, with unparalleled attention to detail and still have brainpower to spare. Can you imagine how these advantages of learning sign language will play out in your career?Finding Sign Language ClassesWhether you are excited at the prospect of signing for your child or yourself, the best way to learn sign language is to take a sign language course. You might think you could hop on Duolingo or any other language learning app or website and get plenty of instruction to learn sign language; there are three main reasons that you shouldn’t.Will you learn t he right sign language? How will you know you’re signing correctly?  How can you develop the needed receptive skills? You may have already tried typing ‘learn sign language’ into your favourite search engine and, surely, you’ve gotten many returns. Do any of them specifically say British sign language or BSL?Most likely, unless you specified you wanted to learn BSL, most â€" if not all of the hits returned were for ASL or American sign language. In fact, those sites may not even specify that their materials are for American sign! You might wonder how different those languages could be; after all, both countries speak mainly English.Let us assure you that even the alphabets are not the same and, as radically different as they are, you couldn’t so much as finger-spell your name and be understood in Britain!Even if you searched specifically for BSL lessons online, you may learn quite a bit but, with nobody to sign with or to, how will you determine that you are communicating cor rectly? And what about interpreting what someone else is signing? If you get no practice conversing in sign, you may never be able to hold a conversation with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing. That is why your Superprof stands firm on taking a sign language class, where you can meet fellow signers, learn all of the vocabulary particular to your area â€" yes, sign language is regional, just like spoken dialect is.We’ve highlighted some of the best courses in the country in our companion article. You can find plenty of resources online to help you learn your second language, just be sure you select BSL apps! Image by Gerd Altmann from PixabayResources and Apps to Learn Sign LanguageIf you are keen to start signing as soon as possible, you only have one recourse: practise as often as you can.You could stand in front of a mirror for hours on end, holding conversations with your reflection or you could make use of the very best resource available to anyone learning to sign. Why not enjoy the warm welcome that the deaf community provides? All across the UK, there are deaf clubs where people get together, often socially but sometimes for a specific purpose â€" think ‘England Deaf Football’, for a convivial evening of signing and fun. Anyone who can sign, hearing or not, is welcome to join them. The deaf and hard of hearing are truly your best help for learning sign language (and they’re great people to be around, too!) but there are more resources for you.You might want a sign language dictionary to download to your phone or watch some sign language videos between classes, just to pick up on particular facial expressions that go with certain signs or that are associated uniquely with sign languages. You may even want to find some fingerspelling exercises and games so you can practise that skills set!All of that can be had online, with one caveat: make sure you are targeting British sign language resources, not some foreign language!Perhaps it would be best to check out the resources and apps we found… During your sign language studies, you might consider a fun night out with your local deaf club Image by Ira Lee Nesbitt from PixabayTips to Help You Learn Sign LanguageWe leave you now with some ideas to consider as you learn this visual language. The first, most vital tip to learning how to sign is to abandon the idea that signing is only for deaf people. In fact, it would be a good idea to educate yourself about deafness â€" for instance, did you know that deaf people, for the most part, do not particularly want to become 'hearing'?You might spend some time with deaf students to see how their lessons are taught and learn about deaf education in general.Learning sign language without immersing yourself into the deaf community is a little like learning French without ever going to France or having any exposure to French culture, French people or French society. You can learn the words but, without understanding the culture, your expressions will lack depth and you will surely miss out on the context of what is being said.By the same token, don’t just learn the sign language alphabet and claim you can sign; that’s a bit like someone who says they speak French and then blurts out the famous line from the Lady Marmelade song…Besides ridding yourself of preconceived notions about deaf people and immersing yourself into the deaf community, we offer these tips:Understand what sign language is: this expressive, gestural form of communication is not a word-for-word translation of your native languageBeware of online tutorials; they may not be in British sign languageChoose your teacher well: some prefer an instructor who can speak and sign; others contend it is better to have a deaf instructor who has been signing since childhoodPractise every day by seeking opportunities to engage with the deaf community: talk with deaf children, go to deaf club meetings and participate in activities with people who are deaf and hard of hearing.Whatever your reason(s) for taking u p sign language â€" because someone in your circle or your hearing demands it, you’ve been studying linguistics or because you are simply interested in language acquisition, we applaud you and encourage your studies by offering more tips for learning sign language.Won’t you let us know how your language studies are coming along?

How is the GMAT Scored

How is the GMAT Scored Score reports The GMAT consists of four unique sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing, and Integrated Reasoning, each of which is graded separately. The score report also includes a total scaled score from 200-800. For the multiple-choice quantitative and verbal portions, the GMAT creates a scaled score, instead of a raw result, as the test is a computer analytical experience. If you answer a question correctly, the next problem will be more difficult, but if you are incorrect, the next one will be simpler. Therefore, each scaled score includes the number of problems answered correctly and their statistical numerical value due to the point system allocated to each question. Answering a challenging question correctly will earn you a higher mark than an easy problem. What is most important about a GMAT score? GMAT results are often confusing due to their scaling algorithm, but what is truly important is the scaled score percentile for quantitative and verbal. The higher the percentile, the more competitive your score will be. The ideal mark differs depending on your testing cohort (typically the testing year). This is some great information on how to improve your GMAT scorethat could help you. The Integrated Reasoning section This portion of the GMAT is scored 1-8 in one-point increments. It is not computer adaptive, and thus does not depend on question difficulty, and it will not be available for scoring on test day. Your result will be communicated via the official score report roughly two to three weeks later. The Analytical Writing section The analytical essay is graded on two scales, both from 0-6. One scale is a human reader, while the other is a computerized scoring system. If the marks received are different, they are then averaged. There are two items to consider about this essay: 1. Over 90% of test-takers, according to the GMAT website, score a 3 or higher on this portion. 2. Human grading is a time-consuming process, hence the delay in receiving your results. Here is some great information on how to improve your GMAT analytical writing scorethat you may find helpful. Cancelling scores While youre in the testing center, immediately after you complete the assessment, you will be prompted to retain or cancel your scores. There are two schools of thought in regard to this matter, but the GMAT fee is never refundable. If you studied (even if you didnt feel entirely prepared) and finished a reasonable percentage of the examination, it is wise to accept your scores. If you know unequivocally that you did not do very well (i.e. completed less than half, didnt write an essay, fell asleep during the test), then cancelling your scores may be a better idea. What now? If you received percentiles below the mark you were hoping for, keep in mind that scores and their relationships to percentiles fluctuate based on timing and your testing cohort. After additional preparationand sitting for another GMAT session, you should feel comfortable understanding that many students take the GMAT multiple times. You may also want to consider these daily activities that can improve your GMAT skills.
